I have learned Spanish from heavy-handed over dramatic Mexican soap opera’s. As I have learned this does not give one a good lexicon from which to draw. What follows is a short list of the lessons that I have learned.

1. The Spanish word for fart and dog are very similar if you cant roll your R’s.

2. “Mamasita en fuego” is not the same as saying “you look lovely”.

3. The phrase “dos monos locos” does not mean you are silly.

4. Mexicans usually appreciate that you are trying to speak their language but seem to hurriedly run off every time I mention “la migra”. I was told it means “hello my friend”.

5. When you are called a gringo it is not the same as being called a friend.
